Differin is a once daily topical treatment for acne. The active ingredient, adapalene, reduces spots and inflammation. Adapalene is a type of medicine known as a retinoid and is supplied in the UK by the pharmaceutical company Galderma.
Differin should be applied to acne prone areas, usually in the evenings, to areas of the face, back and chest affected by spots and inflammation, particularly where blackheads and whiteheads are present.
Whats a good treatment plan?
Treatment with Differin should be continued for at least 8 weeks. If after that time there is no improvement, treatment should be stopped or new types of treatment should be added.
After 3 months, treatment should be reviewed, and if acne has cleared Differin can be stopped. Acne may not come back, and if it does treatment can be restarted. Both Differin and over the counter benzoyl peroxide can be used long term (for many months or years) if needed.
With other acne treatments
Differin can be used with topical preparations containing clindamycin (Duac) or erythromycin (Zineryt) or benzoyl peroxide (non-prescription medicine). When other topical medicines are used with Differin these are usually applied at different times of the day.
Differin should not be used at the same time with other topical retinoids.
Side effects of Differin - cautions
Localised side effects, notably soreness, redness and inflammation of the skin are common, particularly early in treatment. Treatment frequency should be reduced if this occurs, or stopped if there is marked inflammation.
Generalised side effects are unlikely, as little of the active ingredients are absorbed through the skin.
Using Differin more frequently than daily will not increase effectiveness, but will increase the chances of side effects.
Sensitivity to UV light is increased and sun avoidance measures, including the use of sunscreens, are recommended.
Differin is for topical use only. Avoid contact with mouth and eyes. If accidentally ingested contact a doctor straight away.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Avoid use in pregnancy. Differin can be used by breastfeeding women, although application to the chest area should be avoided.
Patient Information Leaflet
The Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) is the leaflet included in the pack with a medicine and must be read before taking the medicine. It is written for patients and gives information about taking or using a medicine.
